Republican to Classical, 1776-1850s

The Revolutionary War sparked new ideals with respect to the purpose
of higher education. A new movement towards a republican education sought to create leaders for the country that
America was becoming. However, this vision was widely ridiculed and student unruliness caused many states to withdraw
financial support. Colleges experienced a great many difficulties near the turn of the century and focus was shifted
to a change in curriculum.
